12- Lead EKG

A 12-lead electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG) is a test that records the electrical activity of your heart. It is a common, non-invasive procedure used to assess heart health and diagnose various heart conditions. Here’s what you need to know about it:

Purpose of a 12-Lead EKG:

Diagnose Heart Conditions: It helps identify arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats), heart attacks, and other heart-related issues.

Monitor Heart Health: Regular EKGs can track changes in your heart over time, especially if you have a history of heart disease.

Pre-Surgical Assessment: It may be used to evaluate your heart's condition before undergoing surgery.

What to Expect During the Test:

Preparation: You may be asked to remove any jewelry and wear a hospital gown. You should also inform your healthcare provider about any medications you are taking.

Procedure: Small electrodes (sticky patches) will be attached to your chest, arms, and legs. These are connected to wires that lead to the EKG machine.

Duration: The test is quick, usually taking about 5 to 10 minutes.

Sensation: The procedure is painless. You will need to lie still and breathe normally while the machine records your heart's activity.

Understanding the Results:

Normal Results: A normal EKG shows a consistent heart rhythm and electrical activity. It indicates that your heart is functioning properly.
